Supplements And Nutrition - The Dynamic Duo Of Good Health

By Allan Marsh

A well-balanced diet and affinity for all food groups ensure right amounts of much-needed nutrients. We have to be realistic, though - not all of us, for instance, are as fond of spinach as good old Popeye, or able to drink milk without feeling weird in the gut area. And this is to say nothing about those who aren't quite nuts about nuts, or those who get "chicken" when asked to eat one of Col. Sanders' finest - in other words, people with nut or poultry allergies. What if you are one of them? Does good nutrition really mean eating celery sticks even if the thought of it all is revolting enough to your carnivorous sensibilities? We can't force you to eat your vegetables just like Mommy used to back in the day, that's why supplements and nutrition are here to help you to this end.

Before taking supplements, it would be wise to seek your doctor's advice. Who doesn't want to have the right supplements and nutrition for their dietary needs, right? The wide variety of supplements include multivitamins, protein supplements, minerals, and specialized supplements. Multivitamins are the most prescribed supplements. In most cases, these are the choice of the average Joe, as many of us simply need additional supplementation which is achieved through these concentrated and regulated gels and tablets. Protein supplements, on the other hand, are a popular choice with athletes who need all the physical prowess they can get for their respective sorts. Mineral supplements come in different varieties, such as calcium to aid bone development. Some kinds of specialized supplements include memory enhancers and special dietary supplements.

Supplements and nutrition must be complementary. Here's a fantastic example of such - taking a Vitamin A supplement would not be necessary if you happen to eat significant amounts of carrots or squash. Why, you may even turn as orange as the foods you like to eat if you have too much Vitamin A in your system - we kid you not! There are other vitamins and minerals that can disrupt the body's routine if you have too much of them. Again, you want to keep your vitamin intake reasonable, and not go about this through overkill.

Hence, a proper supplements and nutrition scheme must be discussed with the doctor in order to prevent overdoses or taking unnecessary supplements. There are ways to regulate the supply, required dosage and sanitation of supplements, and this is done through the good men and women at the US FDA. Of course, this is necessary to ensure your supplements are of the best quality. Yet this is also a power play of sorts, considering the tendency of a lot of consumers to prescribe their own supplements. The agency also stressed the importance of informed use among supplement users.

If you think you're good just by knowing your supplements' names, then think again. Research, read up, ask around until you can find what these supplements do exactly. A lot of these supplements, after all, aren't all that they are hepped up to be, as tests have shown some of them only have a minimal effect on certain deficiencies. And while supplements are undoubtedly a big hit in the health industry these days, a good number of medical professionals still believe that the natural way of correcting deficiencies is still the best way to go. They suggest eating alternative sources of nutrients found in allergy-inducing foods. Hey, real food tastes better than capsules anyway.
