Understanding Grape Seed Extract

By Nathan Leavitt

Grape seed extract or GSE is a powerful antioxidant that is extracted from whole grape seeds. Research shows that the seeds may be better for you than the grapes from where they come. GSE contains polyphenols which have been shown to be 20 times more powerful than vitamin E and 50 times greater than vitamin C. GSE has a high concentration of flavonoids, vitamin E and linoleic acid. An interesting fact to know is that because of polyphenols, purple grape juice has much stronger antioxidants than orange juice. Polyphenols are known to help fight viruses, carcinogens or cancer causing agents and allergens in the body.

It's generally used for various health problems including high blood pressure, heart problems, atherosclerosis, high cholesterol, circulation difficulties, diabetes and cancer. GSE helps to deliver cardiovascular protection. It does this by preventing oxidation of LDL's or poor cholesterol which makes them less likely to stick to arterial walls. This is a procedure that leads to atherosclerosis which is a significant trigger of stroke and heart attacks. GSE also helps to strengthen blood vessels to help make sure there is a good supply of oxygen and nutrients spread to the body.

Grape seed extract has been found to be efficient in improving the flow of blood in the veins. People that have decreased blood flow from the veins in the legs to the heart how found good improvement using GSE. There has also been some analysis that shows that it helps with diabetic retinopathy which is an eye issue from complications of diabetes. It has also been helpful with blood vessel weakness that is also identified with diabetes.

Grape seed extract has been shown to be effective as an antioxidant. It can fight free radicals in the body to help prevent cell damage. Free radicals are highly reactive molecules that are known to cause cell damage in the body. It has been found that with age our bodies produce less antioxidants to be able to fight these free radicals.

GSE also consists of catechins which aid to decrease allergic responses. It does this by preventing enzymes in forming histamines which are part of the allergic response. It can support to lessen stomach and digestive complications which result from having too many histamines.

Procyanidin is found in GSE which was initially discovered in 1936 by Professor Jacgues Masquelier. Procyanidins are believed to assist in stopping aging. It is believed that they do this by helping to increase productivity of vitamin C in cells and finding and ridding toxins. Procyanidins also bind with collagen to help increase elasticity and help the skin. It also helps to prevent damage from the sun that is involved in premature aging. Grape seed extract may be obtained in various types such as capsules, tablets or liquid form. The liquid form is typically added in drops to water or other juice.
